Choosing Guide
Choosing a tattoo is more than picking a design — it’s choosing a piece of art that will live on your skin, tell your story, and evolve with you. As an artist, I’ve seen countless people walk into the studio unsure of what they want, and walk out with something deeply personal once they take the time to understand what truly speaks to them.
Here’s how I guide my clients through the process:
1. Think Beyond Trends
Trends fade — your tattoo doesn’t. The design you fall in love with today because it’s popular online might not hold meaning for you in five years. Start by asking yourself why you want this tattoo. Is it symbolic? A memory? A representation of your personality or values? Meaning lasts longer than style.
2. Consider Placement and Flow
Every part of your body has a unique shape and movement. A good tattoo doesn’t just look good on paper — it fits you. The curve of a shoulder, the flow of a forearm, or the symmetry of a chest all affect how the tattoo will feel and age. Talk with your artist about how the design can complement your anatomy.
3. Research Styles and Artists
From fine-line realism to traditional, geometric, blackwork, or illustrative — every tattoo style requires a different skill set. Find an artist whose portfolio matches the aesthetic you’re drawn to. Don’t ask one artist to copy another’s style; instead, let your chosen artist interpret your idea through their own expertise.
4. Be Honest About Size and Detail
Some designs look great in your imagination but don’t translate well to skin at small sizes. Fine lines and tiny details can blur over time. A professional artist will always advise you on what will age gracefully. Trust that advice — longevity matters.
5. Take Your Time
A meaningful tattoo isn’t a rush decision. Collect references, think it through, and when you’re ready, sit down with your artist to refine it together. A tattoo should be a collaboration — your vision, brought to life with our experience.
